Thanksgiving dinner

Thanksgiving is for spending time with the people that are most important to you. It’s a time for us all to reflect on the past year and really consider what makes our lives truly special…

Before digging into the Thanksgiving feast, many families like to go around the table and let the special people in their lives know what they’re thankful for; family, friends, safety, a big promotion at work, or just good old chocolate. Even Christmas doesn’t eek out that much thoughtfulness in many of us, which is what makes Thanksgiving so very special. Whatever you may be giving thanks for this season, the traditional dinner you’ll get to enjoy is sure to be a delicious treat. However, there are also some unwritten rules that need to be followed if you want your holiday event to be a success. If your family is anything like mine, with so many of you under one roof the chances of immature dramatics are usually increased about ten fold. If you don’t want to find yourself as the root cause of a Thanksgiving disaster, you may want to take heed and avoid these pitfalls! Take a peek at these 5 ways you can ruin your Thanksgiving dinner, and then steer clear!

1) Overindulge in the ‘Holiday Cheer’

Ruin dinner and your reputation by having too much to drink. Yes, the wine will be flowing as soon as the Thanksgiving party begins, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to go overboard. Our biggest piece of advice: pace yourself. The easiest way to ruin Thanksgiving for not only yourself but your entire family is to get obnoxiously intoxicated. Yes, we all have that one story where this type of tomfoolery led to laughter and enjoyment for all, but by and large nobody likes an intolerable drunk at a dinner party. So don’t dive in too quick. There are plenty of tricks you can use to avoid overindulging this Thanksgiving, like tracking the number of glasses of wine you’ve had on your phone, or the simplest way, just saying no to that next refill. See tips on how to avoid an embarrassing drinking catastrophe at Rethinking Drinking.

2) Burn the Beets

Ruin the one dish you were asked to bring. Okay, so you’re not much of a cook. Well, that’s too bad, as you’ve been asked to bring a dish to Thanksgiving dinner. Don’t be scared. It’s just one dish! Do your research and plan ahead. Do not leave this until last minute, or you could be looking at bringing a dish that nobody enjoys eating, smelling, or even looking at for that matter! Meals take preparation, and why not take a little time and really impress your family? You don’t have to get crazy, the internet is filled with incredibly simple side dishes that don’t require any award-winning talents in the kitchen.

3) Behave like Mr. Wolf

Ruin the whole party’s appetite with improper manners. Once dinner is served, don’t behave like an starving animal! Proper manners are not only polite, but expected. Hold your utensils properly, not like a caveman. Use a napkin (folded on your lap), to avoid embarrassing messes. Pass dishes around to your neighbours and look for opportunities to serve others around the table. If you take the time to improve their dining experience, you’ll inevitably improve your own as well. Good table manners aren’t difficult to master, take a look here to perfect your skills and show your family you care.

4) Let Your Inner Jock Get the Best of You

Ruin the family-first atmosphere by sneaking off to watch football. Let’s be real for a second here. Yes, there’s plenty of football to watch on Thanksgiving, and you might be tempted to sneak away to watch your favourite team play the big game. But Thanksgiving is a family-first event. You don’t see your family as much as you should, so now that you have this opportunity to spend some quality time with them, don’t waste your chance sitting in front of the television. Catch a play or two, but give your family the attention they deserve. That being said, if you’re truly aching for a little football action, get sneaky with these tips.

5) Bring Ethel Along

Ruin the family vibe with an unexpected guest. Okay, so you’ve got a new love interest and things are going really well. You’re excited to introduce him or her to your family, but let’s get one thing straight: Thanksgiving is just a truly terrible time for unexpected guests (unless it’s someone in need). The host no doubt has everything planned, down to how many places to set at the dinner table. You could be throwing a wrench into the plans if you happen to bring a guest who wasn’t expected. It’s just not good manners.

Well, there you have it. Ensure this Thanksgiving goes over just as planned by avoiding these 5 Thanksgiving blunders. Your host will thank you for it, and so will your future self!
